Former Spider Joins Sports Reality Staff as Director Sports Performance & Fitness Programming

Mechanicsville, Va. – Sports Reality Performance Training has named Jeff Appel as their new Director of Sport Performance Programming announced Monday October 8th. Appel will join Sports Reality’s staff to spearhead some exciting changes in programming for the business which will take place November 1st. Jeff will use his extensive experience in Division I weight rooms to benefit the clients in areas of general fitness and sports performance training.

"Sports Reality is the gold standard for performance training in the greater Richmond area and to ensure we have programming that attracts the top athletes we knew we needed to bring on the best Coach," said General Manager Jeff Gonos. "We are grateful to be able to bring on someone with over 11 years of Division I experience and who has worked with some of the best athletes in the country throughout all sports. Jeff will be a tremendous asset to our business as he will be tasked to re-program our offerings to maximize what we can do for our athletes. He will lead our team of professionals as we continue to provide the areas premiere athletic and physical fitness programs and we welcome him to Sports Reality!"

Appel currently serves as the Director of Sports Performance at Fork Union Military Academy training high school students and post graduates where he will remain as he works alongside Sports Reality in his new position.

Prior to Fork Union, he worked at the University of Richmond serving as the head strength and conditioning coach for the men's and women's soccer teams, field hockey team, baseball and men's lacrosse team, while being the first assistant for the football program during his nine years with the Spiders.

During his time with the Spiders, the football program made four NCAA DI FCS Playoff appearances, winning a National Championship in 2008. In its first year as a Division I program, the men's lacrosse team won the Atlantic Sun Conference and was the first ever team to make it to the NCAA Tournament in its first year of existence in 2014. Since 2008, the field hockey program won three Atlantic 10 titles, four Atlantic 10 regular season titles and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Appel earned his B.S. in Exercise Science from Colorado State University in 2006 and his M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Western States.

Appel is certified with the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach Association (SCCC) and is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and USA Weightlifting Club Coach. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, United States Weightlifting, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, North American Strongman and USA Powerlifting association.
